A website hit is a request from the server.  Take a website page on your website.  There could be 5 or 6 images, 3 or 4 script files etc.  All these items are individual hits.  Where visits are determined by a persons IP address.  Hits will always be a huge number.  Especially if a user browses your entire website.  Visits is the number you should be concentrating on.
