Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.corkwebdesign.ie 

A subdomain would be test.corkwebdesign.ie, and another would be webdesign.corkwebdesign.ie.

Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.
